It’s a little known fact that the Tudors were closet shopaholics. It was they who laid out the plans for Shrewsbury, Shropshire’s county town, and only such ardent shoppers could have made its streets such a haven for this most popular of pastimes. The Tudors may have gone but their shuts, passageways and gorgeous black & white buildings still remain and are just what they’ve always been - full of independent shops. Take Butcher Row and Shrewsbury's Wyle Cop as prime examples.
Shrewsbury still has long-established firms run by the second, third or even fourth generation of the family. Take Tanners Wines as an example; independent and family-owned since 1842.
Even our shopping centres offer a different experience. Take The Parade in Shrewsbury; over 30 individual shops and not a high street name in sight. That’s left to Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres where you’ll find the likes of M&S and other big name brands. Whether it’s a business new or old, Shrewsbury is full of helpful retailers and staff who actually want to serve you. Vive la différence!
Shrewsbury Market Hall has been home to independent traders since 1965 and has everything you could imagine, from fresh fruit and veg and other foodie delights, to local arts, crafts and collectables. Or, if you want some fresh air try one of Shrewsbury’s markets in the Square.
All shopped out? Then there are plenty of cafés, tea rooms, restaurants, pubs and inns where you can rest, refill and refresh yourself before venturing out into the world again.
