St Mary’s Shrewsbury opens its doors for Heritage Open Days As part of the popular nationwide Heritage Open Days celebration, St Mary’s Church in the centre of Shrewsbury will throw open its doors from Thursday 7th to Saturday 9th September for special tours and talks.

St Mary’s is the most complete medieval church in Shrewsbury, with world-famous stained glass. It is cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust – the national charity protecting historic churches at risk.

Visitors can enjoy special talks, tours and performances:

Free recorder performance by ‘Tempus Infinitum’ – Friday 8th from 11:30am until 2pm

• Drop in to hear this Birmingham ensemble perform from their repertoire of early recorder music from the Baroque and Renaissance period.

Looking Up; A Stained Glass Tour of St. Mary’s - Thursday 7th, Friday 8th & Saturday 9th at 2pm

• Join us to discover the history behind the beautiful glass housed at St. Mary’s Church, from the world-famous fourteenth-century Jesse window to the remarkable examples brought from Europe and installed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Free guided talk lasting 30 minutes.

Altar Cloths Uncovered - Friday 8th & Saturday 9th 1pm-4pm

• We will be opening up our altar cloths cupboard up to the public to have a look at the intricate design and colours of these amazing textiles. We will also answer your questions about the significance of the colours and the history of the cloths. Free; drop-in.

The church will be free to enter and open to explore from 10am until 4pm Thursday 7th to Saturday 9th, with the Battlefield 1403 café serving delicious cakes and lunches.
