Paint the Church Fundraising Fete

in Shrewsbury A county hotel has offered its grounds to host a “paint the church” fundraising fete in aid of a small Shropshire village.

Hannah Hall, owner of The Wroxeter Hotel Ltd, volunteered their services to help organisers stage their traditional May Day event in aid of neighbouring St Mary’s Church in Eaton Constantine.

“We hold the village fete annually but two years ago we lost money and last year we just made a small profit,” said Parochial Church Council secretary Louisa Howard.

“We held both our golden and diamond weddings at The Wroxeter Hotel and Hannah very kindly offered the hotel grounds to host this year’s event especially for our church.

“We hope to have a lot of attractions to make it a wonderful day out for everyone,” said Mrs Howard.

Organisers are appealing for local musicians who would like to perform at the fete on Saturday, May 2 and to anyone who has a traditional maypole.

Attractions include donkey rides, Roman soldiers, wine tasting, Morris dancers, and a variety of stalls with antiques, collectibles, cakes and plants.

All proceeds raised will go towards the redecorating fund for the church.

“It costs £200 a week to keep the church open and we have a regular congregation of about 12 so it is hard to upkeep,” added Louisa.

A fundraising fashion show with ladies from Leighton and Eaton Constantine WI will also be held at the Wroxeter Hotel on April 7.

St Mary’s Church in Eaton Constantine was rebuilt in 1847 after the original was destroyed in a fire.
