New Darwin River Walk in Shrewsbury

New Darwin River Walk in Shrewsbury Visitors to Shrewsbury are now able to follow a new Darwin River Walk with the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of a young Charles Darwin and discover the areas where as a child he would forage for bugs and creepy crawlies in the River Severn.

The Darwin River Walk which covers approximately 1.4 miles, is a circular walk following the loop of the River. Starting in front of the town's new Theatre Severn, it continues following the river, to behind Darwin's birthplace at the Mount.

The route, which features five interpretive boards outlining the history of the area and its connections with Darwin, takes in some of the areas of the town which Darwin as a boy would have been very familiar with.

Areas featured include Frankwell, home to the new memorial 'geo garden' and the Quantum Leap sculpture representing Shropshire's unique geology which helped inspire a young Darwin and 'Doctor's Field' near to the Mount where a young Darwin would have discovered Shropshire's very own bugs and wild flowers.

The River Walk will also allow visitors to the town to see the distinctive landmarks of the Shrewsbury skyline including the town's 13th Century sandstone castle, the square tower of the Library; Darwin's former school, the spires of St Mary's and St Alkmund's Churches and the gilded cross above St Chad's Church where a young Charles Darwin was christened.

The final part of the walk includes steep steps and the River bank can be narrow and muddy in places so suitable shoes are a must.
