On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July Shane Kelleher, the Museum’s Archaeologist, and the Ironbridge Archaeology Volunteer Group are inviting the public to come along and watch as they carry out a geophysical survey at the Coalbrookdale Playground, located at the foot of Cherry Tree Hill. Until the mid-20th century this site was the location of a number of cottages and has never been explored by archaeologists before.
The survey will help the team identify potential areas of archaeological interest and areas for an excavation taking place between Tuesday, 21st July and Saturday, 25th July. It is hoped that the discoveries made during the excavation will provide new insights into previously undiscovered features of Coalbrookdale’s past.
On Sunday, 26th July the Ironbridge Young Archaeologists’ Club will be carrying out their own excavation at the playground. Everyone is welcome to come along to this session, meet the young members along with the leaders and learn more about the many different activities that the group enjoys.
All of these Festival of Archaeology sessions will take place between 12pm and 4pm and are free to attend. No booking is required; visitors can just drop in and chat to the team.
