Commenting on the news, Claire Owen from Shropshire Tourism said "Martin was up against stiff competition and unfortunately it wasn't to be on the day, but he did a fantastic job promoting Shrewsbury and Shropshire and as far as we're concerned he's still our tourism superstar. It was our pleasure to nominate Martin for this award and we are very proud of him for being shortlisted."
The results were announced on 29th March in the Mirror, with entertainer and comedian Buzby Allen, from Potter's Resort in Hopton-on-Sea, Norfolk crowned the winner, and Ade Andrews of the Robin Hood Town Tour, Nottingham, taking second place.
Sarah Long, Head of Corporate Communications at VisitEngland said "A huge thank-you to everyone who took part in the Tourism Superstar initiative. Every one of our nominations is a superstar and fantastic ambassadors for English tourism."
This year's competition received 15,537 votes on the Mirror website, far more than ever before, which VisitEngland has credited in no small part to the huge support generated for the 10 shortlisted nominees. Shrewsbury Town Council's 'For Crying Out Loud – Vote Martin' banners and posters could be seen around the town, with online buttons on Shropshire Tourism websites and support on Twitter and Facebook.
Martin Wood said, "Thanks to everyone who voted and supported me, it was great to be nominated."
