Nordic walking is a full body exercise that is easy on the joints and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It originally started as a summer training routine for cross country skiers. It is based on using specially designed walking poles to harness the power of the upper body to propel itself forward when walking. It is recognised as a way to turn a walk into a whole body exercise that can be done by anybody anywhere.
Severn Valley Country Park is hosting a free Nordic Walking taster session on Wednesday 20th September. Nordic Walking poles will be provided. After instruction, the poles allow the user to take the weight off the knees and lower body joints making you feel lighter on your feet. The free taster session will start with the basic techniques which will help ensure you avoid injury and get the full benefit.
As with other forms of moderate exercise, regular Nordic walking can lower risks of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma and stroke. It can, as part of an exercise programme help you to lose weight.
If you find Nordic walking is for you after trying our free taster session, you can sign up for a 5 week programme. This will be every Wednesday from 27th September. The sessions will cost £5 per session and this will include the hire of Nordic walking poles and a free bottle of Wenlock Spring water. You can book all 5 weeks together for £20; a saving of £5.
For the free taster session and the 5 week programme, please call 01746 781 192 to book you place. For all sessions please wear sturdy books and dress for the outdoors. For all sessions registration starts at 9.45am & walking is from 10am-11am.
