On Tuesday 12th May, Andrew Wood and Mike Shaw, from the Shropshire Mines Trust, are leading a walk to help you discover more about Shropshire’s rich mining heritage.
The lead and barytes mining operation in south-west Shropshire was one of the largest in Europe in 19th century. Whilst you may have visited Snailbeach Mine and the Bog Mine, Andrew and Mike are starting the walk in Pulverbatch, and guiding you to some of the lesser known mine sites at Cothercott and Wilderley.
The walk is 5 miles in length and starts at 9.30am from The White Horse, Pulverbatch. It passes through a hamlet mentioned in the Domesday Book and also visits a local motte and bailey castle, as well as visiting the mine sites. The cost is £5 per person which includes a light lunch on your return to The White Horse, Pulverbatch.
The walk has been organised by the Stiperstones & Corndon Hill Country Landscape Partnership Scheme, a 5-year programme of work to raise awareness of, enhance and celebrate local history and wildlife.
