The Awards are not easy to achieve, with just under 10,000 entries this year and around 33% attaining an Award. Great Taste is the ultimate consumer test, with 405 judges tasting food over 50 separate days. The process is rigorous and the results are highly valued by producers and consumers. There is a level of expectation when a product carries the gold star three, two or one star logo - it helps consumers to decide what to place in their shopping basket. The description of a food or drink winning three gold stars in the Great Taste Awards is Exquisite. Wow! Taste That, the two stars are given to products that are Outstanding and the one star indicates a Virtually Faultless Food.
A pick of the best
Shropshire winners include Maynard's Farm, Marou chocolate, Ludlow Food Centre, Battlefield1403, Great Ness Oil, Brock Hall Farm, The Jammy Cow, Smoke and Pickle, Belton Cheese, Appleby's and more... Brock Hall Farm from Chelmarsh, near Bridgnorth was the only Shropshire business to win a coveted three star gold for their Dutch Mistress rind-washed goats cheese, made with milk from their own goats. Only 125 gold three stars were awarded out of the nearly 10,000 entries. Two stars were awarded to Brock Hall Farm again for another of their cheeses, Ludlow Food Centre for marmalade and also Gloucester Old Spot Pork and Apple Casserole. Other two star winners were Marou chocolate for two different bars, The Jammy Cow for Evil Chilli Chutney and Curetons Fine Food for a Luxury Game Pie.
Clare Downes from Monkhouse Food and Drink commented; "I was fortunate to be asked to judge at the Great Taste Awards this year and so have seen for myself just how detailed the process is. It really is not easy to win an award - the products have to be outstanding and in the case of three stars completely 'out of this world'. After the success of Shrewsbury Food Festival, the county seems to keep putting itself on the map for its excellent food and drink. We encourage food and drink businesses that we work with regarding their PR and Marketing to enter the Great Taste Awards. We feel that the awards are now a symbol quite simply of 'great taste' and this helps consumers to choose what to buy and retailers and chefs to also select the best products to use. So many successes from our county of Shropshire is fabulous - well done!"
