Bear Steps in Shrewsbury

Bear Steps is one of Shrewsbury's well known 'shuts' and passageways.  It's name has survived for centuries, alongside its neighbouring cobbled streets and 'shuts', Fish Street and Grope Lane. Perhaps it was named after 'The Bear' Inn, although no sign of this inn remains.  Housed in the 15th century timber hall above the Steps is Bear Steps Gallery, which forms part of Shrewsbury's thriving contemporary arts scene.
